Luftgekühlt 12: 8,000 people, 300 cars and a hurricane warning
Luftgekühlt began in 2014 as a meet-up in a Los Angeles parking lot, organised by racing driver Patrick Long and Howie Idelson. Its twelfth edition took over Town at Trilith, south of Atlanta, with 300 display cars. Hurricane warnings pushed the start back several hours, and 8,000 fans turned up anyway.
What Porsche says was on show
- 50 years of the 935, including the 1979 Le Mans-winning 935-K3.
- A Targa Florio display for 70 years since Porsche's first overall win there, Umberto Maglioli's in a 550 A Spyder in 1956. It was the first of 11 victories.
- A 917K in Gulf colours from the Brumos Collection.
- Keen Project 911s, brought by Leh Keen.
- A 1957 356 A Outlaw that had been found under rubble in the basement of a North Carolina general store.
Why it matters
Race-winning 935s and a car dug out of a basement share the same show. Twelve editions on, that's still the idea that makes air-cooled culture worth following, and it started with friends and a car park.
